The Index has no account and no sign-in. Your collection, ranks, notes, journal and settings are stored only on your device. We do not collect, sell or share them, and the app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking.
When you ask for suggestions or a perfume description, the app sends that request to our AI service: your request text, the names of the perfumes in your collection and wishlist (for suggestions), or the catalog facts of one perfume (for a description), your chosen language, and a random install ID created on your device. The service forwards the request to OpenAI to write the answer. To keep use fair it counts requests per install ID and per network for up to one day; it keeps a one-way hash of your network address, never the address itself, and no request text. Descriptions it writes are kept so the same perfume is never described twice.
When you ask the app to look up a perfume the catalog doesn't have, the name you typed is sent to the service. It searches the web through OpenAI, reads the product pages it finds (the brand's, Parfumo's, Fragrantica's), and sends back only facts quoted from those pages, with the product picture shown on one of them. Nothing is stored; the request is counted like the other AI requests, and the picture is then kept on your device with the perfume.
When you import a list and ask AI about the names the catalog didn't find, those names are sent to the service. When you ask AI to read a bottle photo, a small copy of the photo is sent. Neither is stored; they are counted like the other AI requests.
When you photograph a shelf to add several bottles at once, each photo, shrunk on your phone, is sent to the service with the install ID, and the service forwards it to OpenAI to list the bottles it sees. The photo is not stored. Shelf photos are counted apart from the other AI requests: ten a day per install, and a daily total for everyone.
When the app shows a perfume from the catalog, it asks the same service for that perfume's picture, sending only the catalog record number. The service keeps a copy of each picture so it is fetched once, and counts requests per network for up to one day to keep use fair. The picture is then kept on your device.
To show an amount in your currency, the app asks the service for the day's exchange-rate table, at most once a day. The request carries nothing about you: no install ID and nothing from your collection. The table is the same for everyone and is kept on your device. The rates are the European Central Bank's reference rates (Source: ECB statistics), shown as approximate (≈) and never used for a payment.
When you open Shops near you, the app asks for your location, approximate and only while you use the app. It is used on your phone only, to sort a list of Singapore shops that the app carries by distance. It is not sent to us or anyone else, and it is not stored. Without it the list is sorted by postcode. Directions open your phone's own maps app with the shop's address.
Backups are files you create and share yourself; they go only where you send them.
Deleting the app deletes everything it stored on your device.
